Is Sex Before Marriage a Sin?

Is Sex Before Marriage a Sin?

by Jesus Centric 1 Comment

God created sex! Sex itself isn't a sin. What makes it a sin is when we do it outside of marriage. In this article, we want to show you what the Bible says about sex before marriage.

God's Intent for Sex

God intended sex to be done between a married couple, only. The Bible says, From the beginning of creation, God ‘made them male and female’” (Genesis 1:27, Mark 10:6-8 ESV). It later states, “‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’” (Mark 10:6-8, Genesis 2:24).

A study was done and found that a man's oxytocin level increase when he has sex with another person. Or, a husband brain reconnects with his wife. But as time goes by and culture gets more distant from God, many of believers have adopted the worldview of what sex is. Many believers believe that sex before marriage isn't a sin because nowhere in the Bible says "you should not have sex before marriage", even when you think you'll marry that person.

What does the Bible Say About Sex Outside of Marriage?

In the Old Testament, sex before marriage was strictly condemned in Judaism and continues to be until today. The same goes for the early Church and Christians as this was the culture that Jesus was raised in. The Bible implies in various verses that sex outside of marriage is against God's divine design.

When going through the Bible, you'll see examples of the importance of marriage and how everyone would wait until uniting with their spouse to have sexual relations.

Even being one of the Bible's clearest prohibitions, people find it hard to find it in scripture. Let's start off by going to 1 Corinthians 7:2. The principle in this passage states that God made sex for the married couple to enjoy. What Satan tries to do is flip everything God says and turn something good into something bad by encouraging sex outside of marriage, and to discourage sex within a marriage. When Paul wrote this letter, he was trying to tell the Corinthian Christians that it was wrong to just hire the services of a prostitute for self pleasure. Refer to Enduring Word for more detailed explanation.

But when we go back to what the Bible says, all passages that talk about sexual immorality being sinful include sex before marriage. There are numerous of scriptures that speak on this topic including: Acts 15:20; 1 Corinthians 5:1; 1 Corinthians 6:13, 1 Corinthians 18; 1 Corinthians 10:8; 2 Corinthians 12:21; Colossians 3:5; Galatians 5:19Ephesians 5:3; Hebrews 13:4; 1 Thessalonians 4:3.

In Revelations 14:4, we understand that it when the Bible says "These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins", it's talking about unmarried Christian men that decide to remain faithful with Christ by not having unmarried sex. When go back a little in the Bible to Hebrews 13:4, it also lists sex outside wedding as immoral.

What About Oral Sex?

The answer is simple. Oral sex is sex and when it's done outside of marriage, it's a sin! Young people always have this view of thinking that it's not.

Yes, Sex Before Marriage Is Wrong

As stated in this blog, we learn of the importance in emphasize the Bible goes on to promote complete abstinence before marriage. There's a huge blessing to the ones that decide to wait to have sex until they're married.

Now what do I do if I already had sex before marriage?

Great news! Jesus still forgives! It's a matter of you going before Him in prayer and truly asking for forgiveness. But when we ask for forgiveness, we must mean it. When Jesus forgave the woman caught in adultery in John 8, He said "Go and sin no more".

Repent and sin no more.

So two things I think many preachers fail to do is to take into account the historical context of the term “marriage”
, their inconsistencies of preaching. To keep it brief. Marriage in these ancient times, would be more akin to dating in modern times. As dating in the ancient past was not a thing and marriage was almost immediate as soon as a suitor was found.
Now for the inconsistencies in preaching. Preachers and pastors often use historical references, or modern analogies where they suit them. Stating “times have changed and heres how the bible would apply today’s scenario” but in other parts of the bible, its words are absolute, no deviating from the black and white meaning of the text, creating quite the ironic hypocrisy. Either the bible and its words are absolute or they are not, and the meanings and lessons need to be adjusted to fit modern times to better educate christians everywhere.
